Raptors and Lakes

The destination for today was Kerang, about 274 km North of Melbourne.  My nights sleep was a tad interrupted by the security guards at the pub discussing issues at 3am but I shifted rooms and got back to sleep.  When I was awake properly - around 6am- the dregs of punters were still oozing out of the pub. Possibly that is tobacco being rolled.  (I do hope these folk are unemployed or on leave as I doubt they'd be very productive at work at 0900!) We began by meeting family members at Lincoln Park, a little distance up Bouverie St in Carlton. The smaller people seemed to enjoy the swing! The definition of a lane in Melbourne is somewhere where the walls are covered in graffiti. On the road, after a small bit of business with Sheila, who chose a very strange route for getting across to the Tullamarine Freeway.  Then heading up the Calder Highway and marvelling at the ability of Roads Victoria to insert low speed limits at random points for no apparent reason. ...

 We are about to head off on a trip to Adelaide.  I realised this was our first long trip since we left Carwoola  and it was obviously not suitable for either the Houses of FranMart or Mallacoota Weather and Wildlife.  My usual store of travel stories was Travels with a Tick Magnet, but we no longer have the small dog.  So here we are with a new blog. This is the planned route. The first stop in Halls Gap has two purposes: It breaks the trip to Adelaide; and Gives us a chance to spend a day in the Grampians. It will still be a long first day (750 km 8:45 hours) but better than 1250kms and 14 hours!  Its the only day much over 500kms.  We are hoping to make an early start since it will probably be getting dark by 1730 hrs and we'd like to have arrived before them. In retrospect it is interesting that I didn't notice, when publishing this post that the route from Leeton to Canberra doesn't go through Wagga.  This became apparent when consulting our ...

Tarra Bulga etc

 The major National Park near Yarram is Tarra-Bulga in the Strzlecki Ranges.  Polly, the phone version of Google Maps GPS system, initially sent us on an interesting route as she decides to avoid small country towns.  In this case Yarram, a transit of which really is not going to add any time.  However, she says "turn left" so I do.  The road is rather narrow and well endowed with vegetation. This was our first encounter with the Tarra River.  It seemed rather trivial so I looked up recent rainfall for Yarram and there has only been 36mm so far this year.  No wonder the ground has been cracked in a few spots. At Tarra Falls a pretty caterpillar was exploring a fern trunk. Here is the top of the fals Lower down: the official steps only go about 1/4 of the way and I was discouraged from following an unofficial goat track.
