To Port Albert

Image
Today was expected to be a bland transfer day. But despite the weather it turned out rather well.  The image shows the drab sky as we drive out on the M1. The traffic coming towards us seemed rather light.  That turned out to be because there had been a crash a few kilometres East and not much traffic was getting through.  This explained why Google Maps had shown a route using the M3 at 7am: while the crash was on the other side of the road, the gawk effect on 'our' side would have been significant. Whatever: we proceeded along the road to about Pakenham and then wobbled around some minor roads before joining the South Gippsland Highway.  This took us to the  Strzelecki Ranges including the  small, and attractive, town of Korumburra. We passed through Leongatha, which despite being described in one website as the centre of South Gippsland, seemed to have very little attraction.   In contrast Meeniyan was very nice and seemed to be a centre f...

A March trip

Image
We haven't seen the daughter since Christmas so have drafted a trip to Melbourne and then on to Port Albert for a few days.  We went for the shorter version of our morning walk to ensure our bodies were functioning.  This gave us a nice sunrise. In case we see any more War Memorials, here is part of one from Cann River. We stopped at Bruthen for the usual pie and beer from Bull Ant brewery.  The street was full of AC Cobras: a club doing a 3 day run through the Alps.   The trees beside the road were not looking in great condition suggesting drier times have arrived. The usual large herds of dairy cattle around Maffra. On getting in towards the centre we came alone Batman Drive.  There was a huge queue of folk walking along towards the G, so I assumed there was an AFL match on, although they didn't look like a footy crowd.  Then I saw the tents etc in the Domain and realised this was something to do with Moomba.  Frances was fascinated by a t...

Final Day and Review

Image
We have been pretty much constantly on the move for a week so were keen to get home to Mallacoota on the 20th.  As Commonwealth Park is effectively unusable until mid October we reverted to a morning walk around Reid.  The first few images are flowers seen in the gardens of that suburb and Glebe Park. Flowering quince A Magnolia about to hit its straps. Plum blossom and a camellia. An unusually tall Hellebore in Glebe Park. A Camellia in Glebe Park. So the car was packed (see below) and we headed off at close to 1000 hrs.  The driving was quite easy although the performance of some of our fellow motorists drew adverse comments at times: if you are going to overtake in a passing lane don't sit in the outer lane doing 2kph faster than the car you are overtaking!   However the sun was shining and on we went. Once past Bombala the weather deteriorated a little with a few showers (when they got to Mallacoota a few hours later they amounted to a surprising...

Raptors and Lakes

Image
The destination for today was Kerang, about 274 km North of Melbourne.  My nights sleep was a tad interrupted by the security guards at the pub discussing issues at 3am but I shifted rooms and got back to sleep.  When I was awake properly - around 6am- the dregs of punters were still oozing out of the pub. Possibly that is tobacco being rolled.  (I do hope these folk are unemployed or on leave as I doubt they'd be very productive at work at 0900!) We began by meeting family members at Lincoln Park, a little distance up Bouverie St in Carlton. The smaller people seemed to enjoy the swing! The definition of a lane in Melbourne is somewhere where the walls are covered in graffiti. On the road, after a small bit of business with Sheila, who chose a very strange route for getting across to the Tullamarine Freeway.  Then heading up the Calder Highway and marvelling at the ability of Roads Victoria to insert low speed limits at random points for no apparent reason. ...
